What to look for when buying a new computer

January 28th, 2009

So you’d like to purchase a new computer?

Confused by technical terms? Not sure what to look for?

This is a question we are often asked by our customers.

We hope this guide will help you to make an informed decision when purchasing your next computer.

Processor or CPU

CPU stands for central processing unit. This is the chip inside your computer which does all the actual calculations and processing work.

Think of it as the brain of the computer. The processor is usually measured in terms of gigahertz or ghz. An example is 2.4 ghz. Put simply the higher the number the faster the processor. For example, typically speaking a 3.0 ghz is faster than a 2.4ghz. Unfortunately it is not always so simple. Recent advances in technology have allowed the creation of such devices as dual core or quad core devices. Dual core processors and quad core processors usually have multiple cores or physical processing units which allow the processing of more than one item at a time. Think of it as running more than one program at a time. For example if you are browsing the internet while checking your email – a dual core or quad core processor will typically allow multiple tasks running at once to be completed quicker.

There are a number of other factors involved in determining the speed of the processor – unfortunately these factors can  become quite complex very quickly. If you are interested in doing more research then look up such terms as FSB (front side bus) speed as well as CPU cache.

Memory or RAM (Random Access Memory)

RAM is often referred to as memory for short.  Memory is fast, temporary storage. It is used by the computer to store information about running programs and the operating system (e.g. Windows).

Thus the more applications or intensive applications you are running, the more memory you should have in your computer.

When the memory begins to run low such as due to too many applications running at once then your computer will begin to operate slowly.

Memory is measured in gigabytes (gb).

How much memory should you go for?

Typical new computer systems will have from 2gb to 4gb of storage space.

Unless you are an avid gamer 2gb-3gb will usually suffice for a home computer or office workstation.

Storage Space or Hard Drive

The hard drive is where you where store all your important data as well as your programs.

It is often difficult to calculate how much space you will need to store all this data.

It is thus important to future proof your computer by choosing to have enough storage space to last you in the future.

Storage space is measured in gigabytes (gb).

Typical size for a new desktop computer is 250gb – 500gb.

Typical size for a notebook or laptop is 120gb – 320gb.

Some people may elect to have increased storage if you will be storing many files or installing lots of large applications like games.

Graphics Card

Confused by terms such as GeForce or Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator?

These terms refer to a special chip somewhere inside your computer which is dedicated to working out and drawing the graphics on screen.

A dedicated graphics card refers to a special card inside the computer dedicated only to processing graphics. If it has its own memory or RAM, this is obviously an advantage as it will leave your computer’s memory free for other uses. The more memory or RAM the card has – usually the more powerful the card and the more capacity is has for processing the graphics.

DogMatrix Technology can offer your a variety of hardware and software in your new computer to meet your every need.

Operating System

The operating system is the main software running on your computer which you use to install and run all your software.

Im sure you have heard of Windows.

Typical operating system’s are Windows Vista and Windows XP.

Windows Vista is Microsoft’s latest operating system. Vista comes in a few editions including Vista Home Basic, Vista Home Premium, Vista Business and Vista Ultimate.

Vista Home Basic is the simplest of all the above offering the least extra functionality. Vista Home Premium offers some extras over Vista Home Basic including the ability to use your computer as a media centre.

Vista Business is recommended for business use as it provides advanced business functionality e.g. remote desktop and domains.

Vista Ultimate is the top of the line edition providing the functionality that all the other editions offer as well as a few extra advantages.

Windows XP is the predecessor to Vista. Some people still prefer to purchase a new computer with Windows XP due to familiarity with the interface.

We can provide you with the option of any of the above operating systems in your new computer.

Optical Drive

New desktops and laptops will typically come with a DVD burner. This is recommended as it will allow you to read CD’s, DVD’s as well as burning your own CD’s and DVD’s

Speakers

You should be aware most new desktops do not come with speakers. Unless you already have a set of speakers, you should always get yourself a decent set of speakers for your new desktop.

Mouse and Keyboard

The mouse and keyboard are your primary means for interacting with your computer. Thus it is important to get yourself a mouse and keyboard that you are comfortable with as you will spend a lot of time operating them.

Mice and keyboard can both be wired or wireless. A wireless mouse is recommended for home use as a cable can get in your way.

There are a large range of mice and keyboard available. Contact us for recommendations.

Computer Monitors

It is important to choose the right size as well as a good quality monitor for your new desktop.

It is usually unnecessary to purchase a monitor for a laptop as they will have their own built in screen.

Typical monitor sizes range from 19″ to 24″.

When purchasing your laptop – consider what screen size you will need. A larger screen size usually means a larger laptop, while conversely a smaller screen usually means a smaller laptop.
